"What a view! "   

The arising of Atibaia is related to the pioneers' from São Paulo history that explored a vast territory in search of wealth. In their trips for the interior, the pioneers sought places to rest, usually close to rivers.    

Atibaia is located 69km far from the city of São Paulo. It is limited by Bragança Paulista , Francisco Morato, Mairiporã, Jarinu, Campo Limpo Paulista and. To arrive to it coming from São Paulo, proceed by the highway Fernão Dias. The city has municipal airport.

Pedra Grance (Big Rock) - Located in Serra do Itapetinga (Itapetinga Mountains), the Pedra Grande, 1.450m high and a great surface, is one of the best ramps for hang-gliding of the area, besides a spectacular observatory. The place, used for several championships, became a meet point for several apprentices' of the hang-gliding.   

Trilha da Subida (Ascent Trail) - with 2km of extension, unevenness of more or less 500m and about two hours long. It is the longest trail, demanding good physical conditions. It passes by several caves and nascents.    

Trilha do Cocuruto (Summit Trail)  - with 300m of extension, unevenness of approximately 40m and about 20 minutes of walk, it begins at the Pedra Grande's  slope, reaching the summit of the Serra do Itapetinga, almost 1.500m of altitude. There is no drinking water along the trail.   

"Pedra Grande is the best attraction."   

Parque Edmundo Zanoni (Park)- there you find the Natural History Museum, snack bar, playground, art exposition pavilion, forests, lawn and a lake. The traditional Festa das Flores e Morangos (Flowers and Strawberries Party), in September.   

Museu Municipal João Batista Conti (João Batista Conti Municipal Museum) - it has an important historical collection of the city and of the old province of São Paulo. Built in 1836, it has already been the headquarters of the city Chain and Forum.   

Museu Ferroviário Dinâmico (Dynamic Rail Museum) - it's the railroad of the 19th century, and offers a real trip to the past in its locomotives, an English Mogul and an American Baldwing. With passengers', load and bedrooms' wagons.    

Igreja São João Batista (Saint John the Baptist Church)  - Originated from the chapel built in 1665, by order of the pioneer Jerônimo de Camargo. The church, located in Praça da Matriz (Head office Square), keeps some architectural and artistic treasures, as Baroque images and a great panel painted by Benedito Calixto.   

"On top of those stones the view is even better."   

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Rosário Holy Mother Church) - built  more than 150 years ago, to welcome the slaves, it was known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Homens Pretos (Holy Mother of Black Men Church).   

Igreja de São Benedito (São Benedito Church) - originated from a house where all  Wednesday nights, the followers met to pray before São Benedito's image.    

Casarão Julia Ferraz (Julia Ferraz Big house) - built in 1776, it is the only residential building that resisted the time, being protected by the National Historical Patrimony.   

Represa da usina (Power Station Dam)  - built in the beginning of the century, it is well conserved and it is located in environmental preservation area. The dam, formed by  Atibaia river's waters, is sought for the practice of nautical sports and fishing.

Parque Municipal do Itapetinga (Itapetinga Municipal park)  (Grota Funda) - the vegetation is formed by secondary forests, with varied sizes of rocky bloomings. For study of the flora and fauna of the area, many projects were already developed and others are in development.   

Lago do major (Major Lake) - this name is due to its location in front of the school Major Juvenal Alvim. A beautiful lake ornaments the area, offering a jogging track around its margins. On the other side of the lake, considered the initial mark of the most agitated point of the city, with several bars and night houses, it is located the Spa of the city and an ideal space for events.

Tips by GUSTAVO VIVACQUA

1. The best attraction is Pedra Grande. Don't miss visiting it.    

2. The place is cold and it is good to take thick coats.   

3. The city has a very agitated night, with many bars and nightclubs. Enjoy.   

4. Pedra Grande is a good place for the practice of montainbiking, for walks and the most appreciated sport, hand-gliding.   

5. Some people camp in Pedra Grande. They surely wake up with an outstanding
